Ft. Raleigh the Lost Colony at Roanoke Island

Tuesday, August 13, 2019

Today we headed to the island of Roanoke to the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site for some history.

This is where the first European colony settled in America in 1587. The governor, John White, was the grandfather of the first European baby born on American soil. Her name was Virginia Dare. John White headed back to England when the colony ran out of supplies and when he returned three years later (there was a war with Spain going on and he couldn’t get funding or ships to get him back to America any sooner), the colony of people had vanished.

The only clue he found was CRO engraved in a tree and the word CROATOAN on a gatepost.

It is kind of odd thinking you are in a forest on a barrier island in the Atlantic Ocean.

The island is also know for being a Freedman’s Colony (runaway slaves) from 1862-1867.

There isn’t a fort or village to look at here. Just a museum with some artifacts and displays.

Kyrah is trying to look “queenly” while sitting on the throne.

Kyrah, Audrah and Jedidiah did the Junior Ranger books and earned the badge.

On the way home, we looked for the Mothervine. We found it! It is guessed to be a 400 year old scuppernong grapevine.

Here is an article in NC’s “Our State” magazine on the elderly couple that own the Mothervine.

We ran by Walmart on the way home to get some wave boards. Jedidiah and Audrah had a half hour to try them out when we got home. They had fun. We’ll get out there again tomorrow.

Had taco and chili leftovers for supper.

We’re going to round out the evening by watching the Baltimore City Finals of American Ninja Warrior.

Pray for Kyrah and Jeshuah. Both are running low grade fevers this evening.
