Mammoth Cave, KY

November 11, 2018

Today we spent the day underground…literally.

We toured Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. There are over 400 miles of underground passages in Mammoth Cave!

Our tour entered the cave several miles from the old “Historic Entrance”. We took a bus ride 4 miles out into the woods to a sinkhole where a door is built into the side of nowhere. The ranger unlocked it and told us we were about to descend a total of 500 very narrow stairs! The temperature underground was 54*, which on this particular day, was warmer than the temperature outside.

Photos were a little difficult as flash photography was not allowed. The lighting they have in the cave is a dim orange light. Suzie edited a few to black and white to help show the details more clearly.

After exiting the cave, we hiked on the trails and saw the “Historic Entrance”.

The Styx River

For dinner, we stopped at a Long John Silver’s restaurant. When Donald and Suzie were first married (and dirt poor (0:) this was where we would go for our Friday night date night. We would order a fish-n-chicken-add-a-chicken and shared a drink for $7.49. That was 28 years ago! We both ordered our own this time around. The meal only has increased in price by 50 cents.

Bonus picture:

We stopped at Walmart to grab a gallon of milk for breakfast…couldn’t believe the price for a GALLON of milk!

  1. We enjoyed exploring Mammoth Cave with Jennifer a few years ago. We enjoyed your pictures. The cave is appropriately named. 🙂 Thanks for sharing your adventures with us! Love all of you! Grandma Jo & Grandad Tim
