Today we visited Petroglyph National Monument in New Mexico.

There are three canyon trails to hike (you drive to each one) where you can see thousands of intricate petroglyphs etched into the edge of a volcanic mesa bordering northwest Albuquerque.

The trails were sandy.

No one can explain what these etchings actually mean. Perhaps road marks for others coming behind in a migration or perhaps they hold some sort of spiritual significance.
Some of the images were better seen through binoculars.

This was our first hike at a much higher elevation, Albuquerque’s elevation is 5,312 feet. A little over a mile; coming from Oklahoma which is a little over 1,000 ft. elevation. We all noticed it.

It’s definitely dryer too. We’ve all been using more lip balm that usual. (0:

After Petroglyph, We drove another 4 hours west this evening to Homolovi State Park in Arizona.
We crossed the Continental Divide while still in NM. The grainy picture is due to a pile of bugs on the windshield!

Hello Arizona!

We saw a couple of Route 66 places. Liked the Wigwam Motel!

Saw our first snow-covered mountain.

And some very different landscape.

Not to mention a pretty sunset.

We arrived at our campground after dark only to find someone else had parked in our reserved site. They said they misread the sign (it had a RESERVED placard on the post…but also said if the site was vacant, one could rent it by the night, very confusing).
Fortunately, there was another vacant site with the same hook-ups as our reserved one so we pulled in and set up for the night (after getting permission from the park host).
