Redwoods day 1

Saturday October 5, 2019

We are staying at Mystic Forest RV park in Klamath, CA. It is a very nice and well maintained park owned by Tom and Carolyn Aztec. If you’re ever in the Redwoods area, stay with them! They have tent camping all the way up to big rig RVs.

We headed into the Redwood Forest. We had read about Hyperion, the largest tree on the planet at 380.1 feet tall. They don’t publish the location of this tree so that people cannot find it and mess it up. But they do tell you it is in the Tall Tree Grove. In order to hike that spot, you have to get a permit from the Rangers. So we went to the visitor center to get one and ran into a guy we met yesterday at the Oregon Caverns. He and Donald talked a bit last night and found out that we both were headed to the Redwoods So, since we have an extra seat in the van, we asked Mathais if he wanted to come along and spend the day with us. He is from Switzerland and is touring the US on a motorcycle for 15 weeks. He has 5 weeks yet to go.

This block of wood has antlers!

The story goes that an elk got stuck in it and died and the tree grew around his skull.

You can see on the back of the piece of wood where his skull is.
