Cochella Valley Preserve

Saturday, November 16, 2019

We are staying on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) Land. One can park and camp for free on these public lands. Here’s our view.

We have wanted to see the San Andreas Fault. So we headed to the Cochella Valley Preserve.

Here we are standing on the fault line. Donald, Jed and Audrah are standing on the North American Plate. Jeremiah, Jeshuah and Kyrah are standing on the Pacific Plate. Suzie is straddling the fault line.

You cannot see it on the ground…the guide here told us where they were and took our photo.

We didn’t see an actual split in the crust of the earth, but we did see the oasis created by the plates separating and allowing the water seepage. The palms you see in these photos are the ONLY native palm trees in California. They don’t shed their fronds like most palm trees. The fronds are actually a habitat for animals that live in them.

Come walk with me…

Water seeping up in the oasis.

The temperature difference in the cool shade is obvious.

Walk with me some more…

See the oasis in the desert.

Fruit on the palm tree.

Looks like a sidewinder snake has crossed this path.

They called this place Thousand Palms, you can see why.
