We drove into the park and just looked for places to climb. When the kids saw some they wanted to scramble up on, we stopped.

Flowers in the desert.

More cactus

Cholla Cactus

Then we drove over to Skull Rock

Here’s a little rock education. Most of the rocks that the kids and Donald are scrambling on are monzogranite.

We stopped at the visitor center to refill our water bottles before going on a two-hour Ranger led hike to Fortynine Palms Oasis. Saw this roadrunner in the parking lot.

Cactus along the trail, this one is a hedgehog cactus.

Our first glimpse of the palm trees at the oasis.

Barrel Cactus

Came upon a ram.

Getting closer to the oasis.

Almost there…

This is a well nourished oasis. The tall palms are healthy and there are young ones coming up. They get water from underground that comes up fault line splits. So, it really is true that you can find an oasis in the desert!

We stopped in at the visitor’s center for Kyrah, Audrah and Jedidiah to turn in their Jr. Ranger books and get badges (and hats).

Caught a beautiful sunset as we were driving to Pizza Hut.

We can put down some pizza!
