Fredericksburg Battlefield

October 8, 2018

Today we headed into Fredericksburg, VA for some history. We visited the site of the Civil War Battle of Fredericksburg. The Union army took heavy casualties in this battle as they had no cover and the Confederates were fairly safe and hidden in the Sunken Road.

Field where the Union Army came up the hill. The Confederates were behind that long stone wall near the middle of the picture.

This the Sunken Road that you cannot see from the field.

This road brought supplies to the Confederate troops. Most of the wall has been reconstructed but this section where the kids are standing is original.

At the top of Marye’s Heights is a cemetery for the buried Union soldiers. Many not identified.

Notice the bullet and cannon pock marks on the gateposts.

Some grave markers have soldier’s names and states where they were from.

Others have only an identifying number and then the number of soldiers buried in that plot.

Then we drove across the Rappahannock River to visit the Chatham House. This house was used by the Union Army as headquarters as well as a hospital for its many wounded.

These two trees are said to have been there during the Civil War. They sure look like they were!

View of the Rappahannock River from the Chatham house. Off to the right was where the Union Army attempted to build a pontoon bridge to get the troops across.

From this location, cannonballs were fired into Fredericksburg.

We drove to one more place where the Confederate Army had their cannons positioned against the Union charge.

We stopped at Chick-fil-`A for supper.
