Lyndon B. Johnson State and National Parks

December 21, 2018

Today we drove to Stonewall, Texas to visit the birthplace of Lyndon B. Johnson and his Texas ranch.

We visited the state park first and walked through the living history part of the park called the Sauer-Beckmann Farmstead. There were cows, a pig, sheep and gardens that are cared for year-round. The homes there were build by German immigrant settlers.

Thought this was a good representation of the cycle of how deer’s antlers grow and shed.

Then we went to see their Texas Longhorn herd. They didn’t want to be photographed. (0:

On the drive over the Pedernales River to the LB Johnson National Historic site, we got to see the bison herd that is kept there. Didn’t get a good shot of them either as they were laying down on a hill way out in the pasture.

A church on the property.

At the historic site, you can visit the birthplace of LB Johnson as well as his Texas White House.

He turned his ranch into a working house and it is said that he spent 25% of his presidency there conducting his work from Texas.

View of the Pedernales River from the house.

He was said to have held cabinet meetings on the front lawn and this tree is called the Cabinet Tree.

He had an airstrip put in so he could fly right to the ranch from San Antonio or Austin and also to have heads of state and dignitaries flown to the ranch.

We decided on bbq for supper and ate at a good restaurant in Blanco. Old 300 BBQ.
