Grand Canyon Day 1

Wednesday, May 1, 2019

Got up this morning to see the sunrise. Since Arizona does NOT observe daylight savings time, the sun arises at 5:15 in the morning. Not only is that early, it is pretty cold then too.

You just cannot take a bad photo in the Grand Canyon.

We decided to try a trail.

Looking up from the trail at the clouds, it’s rather dizzying.

The view from Ooh Ahh point.

If you look carefully, you can see the winding trail down in the canyon.

Suzie knew she couldn’t do a lot of downhill hiking with her knee, she and Kyrah went down with everyone else and turned around at Ooh- Ahh point (our hike was about 2 miles and 90 minutes).

Here behind Kyrah, you can see the different layers of trail that people are traveling.

Donald and the rest of the kids continued down the trail. Donald, Audrah and Jedidiah made it all the way to Skeleton Point (about 6 hours and 7 miles).

Jeshuah, Josiah and Jeremiah continued down to the BOTTOM of the canyon to Phantom Ranch! 15 miles. It took them 9 hours to go down, rest and then come back (they hiked down with all the rest of us so they weren’t going for speed). The tiny print they are pointing to on the sign says that it is not advisable to make that trek in one day and that rescue is not guaranteed (yikes). They  made it fine though. They’re pretty fit fellas, plus it wasn’t a really hot summer day.

They made it!

On the suspension bridge over the Colorado River.

Elk are plentiful here, they’re all over national park, including the campground.

More flowers in the canyon.

Every way you look, it is magnificent and vast.
