Grand Canyon Day 3

Friday, May 3, 2019

Today, Jeshuah and Jeremiah left early to start their race to the bottom of the Grand Canyon on the Kaibab Trail. It is 7.5 miles one way.

They got down in 1.5 hours! They rested for about 2 hours and then took a little over 3 hours to get back up.

Their view from the bottom of Grand Canyon.

People can hire a mule train to ride to the bottom to spend the night at Phantom Ranch. You ride down one day and ride up the next. If you’d like to do this, you need to plan at least a year in advance as reservations are that far taken.

People will also hike down one day, spend the night either in a cabin or in their own tent and then hike back up the next day. You can eat at the ranch but you’d better be ready to pay a pretty penny for anything. It’s expensive as supplies are brought in either by mule train or helicopter drop.

There were nice fig trees down there too.

While they were doing that, the rest of us took the shuttle bus to all the stops on the rim trail going west in the park.

Colorado River, in our binoculars, we could see kayakers and raft riders.

After we took these pictures in the trees, some Chinese tourists wanted to give it a try. They couldn’t speak any English but they handed their very expensive camera to Donald and gestured that they wanted him to take the photos! We got a kick out of watching them having fun.

The end of the trail is Hermit’s Rest.

This was so nice to see.

Another beautiful sunset.
