Death Valley Day 3

Sunday, November 10, 2019

Since we drove around so much yesterday, we needed to fuel up the car. The prices in the park are astronomical!

So, we decided to drive out of the park to the nearest town; Beatty, Nevada.

We started by stopping at the mule team display. The mule teams used to haul borax out of the desert.

The two box trucks carried the borax and the barrel carries 1200 gallons of water to sustain them on the trip.

The borax was dug out of the ground and then refined in these vats.

On the way out, we passed a ghost town called Rhyolite. Back in the gold rush days, this was a booming town.

Bottle house

They actually had a ghost display of the Last Supper.

Saw this truck wearing a backpack (ha).

WE arrived in Beatty, NV.

There are burrows that wander around town.

Saw a tarantula

And a Tonka truck.

Fuel was much cheaper here. The town is tiny. The local grocery store is a Family Dollar store. We decided to have lunch in town. There was a Denny’s in a casino in town.

After returning to the park, we hiked the Mosiac Canyon.

There is marble along with sandstone walls in this canyon.

Sliding down the marble…

We had to climb up some dry waterfalls.
